It’s Monday, which means there are a lot of NFL players waking up sore today.
The Monday after playing 78 snaps in an overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders guard Sam Cosmi woke up so sore and stiff he couldn’t turn his neck. To glance behind him or look to the side, he had to turn his entire upper body.
“It’s always the next day,” he said. “You wake up and feel like you were just pushed down a hill and kept rolling. You feel like crap.”
Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison would pay to have an acupuncturist, a dry needlist, massage therapists and chiropractors travel to wherever he is in season, costing an estimated $300,000 a year.
Terry McLaurin recently got an in-home sauna to help with his recovery.
Another physically demanding job is a firefighter, and nobody knows that better than the father of Cowboy’s Head Coach, Mike McCarthy .
Joe McCarthy, was a firefighter for the Pittsburgh Fire Bureau and an officer for the Pittsburgh Police.
He also owned a bar and grill that provided postshift fuel for workers at a couple of nearby steel mills.
A steelworker might be lifting and moving heavy objects (potentially over 50 pounds) repeatedly throughout an 8-hour shift.
Maybe that’s why there is precedent for successful football players who were former steel workers:
Mike Ditka (Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints): Ditka grew up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, a town known for its steel mills. His father worked in a mill, and Ditka himself worked in one for a summer after high school.
Mean Joe Greene (Pittsburgh Steelers): Greene was one of the most feared defensive players in NFL history, and he was known for his aggressive style of play. He also worked in a steel mill for two summers after high school.
Speaking of Mean Joe Green, in 1979 he was in a commercial where he trades his jersey for a bottle of Coke from a young fan:
This eventually was used as the inspiration for a a movie, where Billy’s father is killed in a steel mill accident and Billy is taken in by the Steelers. (Billy is played by Henry Thomas aka Elliott from E.T.)
The movie features appearances by several other Steelers players, including Franco Harris, Terry Bradshaw, and Lynn Swann.
The movie's theme song, "The Steeler and the Pittsburgh Kid," was written and performed by Kenny Rogers.
The movie was remade in 1991, starring Gary Busey as Mean Joe Greene.
The movie was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards in 1982, for Outstanding Children's Program and Outstanding Writing in a Children's Program.
