Lots of NFL history was made this week:
Five NFL teams converted a game-winning field goal with no time remaining yesterday. That’s the most game-winning scores with no time left in regulation in a single week in NFL history.
Josh Dobbs is the first player in NFL history to have a Pass and Rush TD in multiple games for multiple teams in a season.
Buck and Aikman are now the longest-tenured broadcast crew in NFL history
CeeDee Lamb is officially the first WR in NFL history to have 3 straight games of 10 catches for 150 yards.
Punter AJ Cole set a single-game NFL record in the game yesterday with a 63.6 yards per punt average - the highest single-game average in NFL history (min. 4 punts).
Something that I’m unsure will ever happen again in NFL history is getting drafted and not know.
In the 1971 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills spent their 1st round pick (4th overall) on WR J.D. Hill, making him the first non-QB off the board.
Hill had no idea he got drafted until 3 days later, saying afterwards,
Norm Michael, fullback from Syracuse, was drafted by Philadelphia in the 18th round in 1944.
He didn't know about it until he read a newspaper article in 1999, 50+ years later.
Michael was in the Army when the draft happened, hence why word never reached him.
It’s like Hiroo Onoda, the Japanese soldier who after WWII ended, still spent 29 years hiding in the Philippines until his former commander travelled from Japan to formally relieve him from duty by order of Emperor Shōwa in 1974.
Sometimes you just don’t know, like Chase Young on why Washington traded him:
“I don’t know what they’re doing over there. That’s over my head.”
Numbers
9.9: Browns WR Amari Cooper is averaging a career-high 79.4 YPR this season. He’s been super efficient, averaging 9.9 yards per target (career high).
17: In Nathaniel Hackett’s last 17 games as a play-caller, his offenses have generated one or fewer touchdowns 14 times.
1,502: Chargers in Justin Herbert's 59 career starts, including playoffs
Points scored: 1,502
Points allowed: 1,502
291.8 [TRIVIA]: Stroud is leading all NFL quarterbacks in passing yards per game, averaging 291.8. The last time a rookie led the NFL in passing yards per game was WHEN?
Quotes
“I was wide open, and I dropped it. Got a little cocky thinking about what fan I was going to give the ball to. Can’t do that…I got what I deserved.”
Mike Evans on dropped TD
“I feel a bit like an arsonist that put out his own fire and then gets a pat on the back.”
Browns K Dustin Hopkins on making the game-winning field goal after missing an extra point that would have tied the game
“When you have one of the best receivers in the league, I’m not stupid.”
Raiders HC Antonio Pierce on getting the ball to Davante Adams early and often
“He tripped me, kicked me in my knee and kind of messed up my day…I didn’t know what happened. I have a lot of respect for him, but tripping me, kicking me in my knee, [I] could have got seriously hurt. It was just a dirty play.”
Arik Armstead on Brandon Scherff
