Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ iconic creamsicle jerseys return today.
According to legend, the Creamsicle was invented in the 1920s by Frank W. Epperson, the same person who created the Popsicle.
In 1905, when he was just 11 years old, he accidentally left a mixture of soda powder and water with a stirring stick on his porch on a cold San Francisco night. The mixture froze around the stick, creating the first "Eppsicle."
He then decided to experiment with combining vanilla ice cream with a fruit-flavored ice shell, creating what would become known as the Creamsicle.
Though he filed for a patent on his "frozen confectionery" in 1923, he ended up selling his patent rights to the Joe Lowe Company in 1925. This decision reportedly caused him significant financial regret later in life.
The Popsicle became an enormous commercial success during the Great Depression era particularly, as it was an affordable treat (often sold for just a nickel) that could be split between two children using the famous "twin" Popsicle design.
The story of the Popsicle's success wasn't without controversy, however. In 1924, a fierce legal battle erupted between the Joe Lowe Company and Good Humor over frozen treats on sticks.
The courts ultimately drew a clear line: Good Humor received exclusive rights to ice cream on sticks, while Popsicle Corporation maintained rights to water-based frozen treats.
When Popsicle later attempted to enter the ice cream market with "Ice Milk," they were quickly forced to back down.
The Bucs initial choice to go with orange was influenced by several factors including the state's citrus industry.
In the early 1900s, citrus crate labels became an art form. These vibrant labels, now collectors' items, often featured idealized Florida scenes with palm trees, beaches, and beautiful women picking oranges.
Speaking of advertisements and oranges, during NFL games, you might notice someone wearing bright orange gloves on the sidelines - this is, who I call, "Orange Glove Guy." He’s officially known as the TV timeout coordinator.
When it's time for a commercial break, they'll cross their arms over their chest to signal to the referees. The NFL requires a minimum of three commercial breaks per quarter, plus additional breaks during natural stoppages in play (like timeouts or injuries).
Each NFL game typically has around 20 commercial breaks totaling about 100 real-time minutes. The timing of these breaks follows a strict format called "the commercial format sheet."
In the past 30 days, commercials featuring Jason Kelce have had 26,865 airings.
In the past 30 days, commercials featuring Travis Kelce have had 94,447 airings.
DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM, the three largest sportsbooks in the US, bought more linear TV ads from August 15 through the first three weeks of the NFL season this year than in the same period last year, according to data from measurement firm iSpot.
DraftKings spent an estimated $36.4 million, up 22% compared to the same period last year.
FanDuel spent an estimated $27.1 million, up 14%.
BetMGM spent an estimated $11.5 million, just shy of its 2023 spend over the same time period.
