Finally, a good Thursday night game.
The Ravens have distinguished themselves in the first 10 weeks of this season. Looking at the past four decades of the NFL, they are among five teams that have spent the least amount of time trailing their opponents. However, despite this impressive record, they are the only team in this elite group to have suffered any losses.
The Ravens have lost 7 games in the last two regular seasons with Lamar as the starter.
They had at least a 75% win probability, according to ESPN's win probability tracker, in the fourth quarter of every single one.
In 5 of 7, they had a 90% chance to win in the fourth.
It begs the question. Is it because of their mascot?
Ravens have been featured in ancient stories from around the world and in almost every culture they’re associated with death, illness, or a bad omen.
For example in Swedish folklore, ravens are the spirits of murdered people who weren’t given Christian burials.
Irish folklore sees ravens as symbols of warfare.
The Hindu deity, Shani, is often visualized as mounted on the back of a giant raven. As a protector of property, Shani is believed to be able to repress the thieving tendencies of these birds.
That said, it’s not all bad.
In Native American mythology, the raven is seen as the creator of light (and as a trickster figure.)
In Roman mythology, the Roman general Marcus Valerius Corvus had a raven settle on his helmet during a combat, which distracted the enemy’s attention, allowing Valerius to kill his enemy.
With Joe Burrow having the lowest turnover-worthy play percentage in the NFL this season (1.4%), Ravens fans can only hope that he’ll be distracted and tricked into throwing a pick.
